Staying Safe Online — Your Digital Security Toolkit

Build your personal cybersecurity toolkit with practical tips for keeping your accounts, devices, and information safe.

Your Security Checklist

Cybersecurity does not have to be complicated. A few simple habits can protect you from the vast majority of threats: 1. Use strong, unique passwords for every account 2. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible 3. Keep your software and apps updated 4. Think before you click any link 5. Back up your important files regularly 6. Be careful what you share publicly online Most cyberattacks succeed not because of genius hacking, but because people skip these basic steps.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication adds a second layer of protection beyond your password. Even if someone steals your password, they still cannot get into your account without the second factor. The two factors are usually: 1. Something you KNOW (your password) 2. Something you HAVE (your phone) When you log in, after entering your password, the site sends a code to your phone or asks you to approve the login in an app. It takes an extra 10 seconds but makes your account dramatically harder to hack. Turn on 2FA for your most important accounts first: email, school accounts, and any social media.

Public Wi-Fi and Privacy

Public Wi-Fi (in cafes, airports, hotels) is convenient but risky. On an unsecured network, someone nearby could potentially see what you are doing online. Safety tips for public Wi-Fi: - Avoid logging into important accounts (banking, email) - Make sure websites use HTTPS (look for the lock icon) - Do not do online shopping or enter credit card numbers - Consider using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) which encrypts all your traffic - Turn off auto-connect so your phone does not join random networks At home, make sure your Wi-Fi has a strong password too!
Pro Tip

Regularly Google your own name and check what information about you is publicly available. You might be surprised what is out there! Check your privacy settings on all social media accounts. Set profiles to private if you do not want strangers seeing your posts. Remember: anything you post online could potentially be seen by anyone, forever.

Security Audit Your Life

Do a personal security audit: 1) Check three of your most important accounts (email, school, social media) — do they use strong unique passwords? Turn on 2FA if they offer it. 2) Check your phone for app updates — install any pending updates. 3) Check privacy settings on one social media account — who can see your posts and information? 4) Look at the last 5 emails you received — can you identify any that look suspicious? This 15-minute audit can prevent a lot of headaches!
